Disclaimer:  this article only shares general advice. The POA is not an expert in this area. Always consult with a pool cleaning company with expertise in this area. The POA is also not a health expert – but we want to share information on what the CDC has published specifically on raccoon feces in pools. Always consult with experts in this area.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals that are known for their curiosity and intelligence. They are also known for defecating in pools – particularly on the top step entering your pool.  So, what should you do after a raccoon or other animals poops in your pool?

  • Close the pool and keep everyone out of the pool due to health concerns.
  • Call a pool cleaning company with expertise in fecal removal.  The pool company will most likely take the following steps:
    • Carefully scoop the poop out of the pool and properly dispose of the poop.
    • Sanitize the pool scooping equipment to avoid recontaminating the pool.
    • Application of chemicals/chlorine does not resolve all issues. The CDC recommends either:
      • (1) backwash your filter, drain the pool completely, hose down the walls, properly replace the filter element and dispose of the old filter and, refill the pool with water or
      • (2) run your pool filter for 24 hours, backwash your pool filter, and properly replace the filter element and dispose of the old filter.
